Dr. Elvina Lui, Ph.D., LMFT

I am a couples counseling and sex therapy specialist. I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and certified sex therapist with a Ph.D. in Clinical Sexology. Starting out in 2007, I have almost 20 years of clinical experience. I have helped hundreds of couples repair and improve their relationship.

My parents divorced when I was a young child and I just did not understand why they had to break up. That was the beginning of my curiosity and interest in relationship problems. I remember thinking to myself, if two people started out loving each other, what went wrong? Shouldn't it be as simple as two people keeping their promise to always have each other's backs, "if you always love me, I will always love you"?

Fast forward 40 years, now I fix relationships for a living. I could not save my parents' relationship, but it brings me so much fulfillment when I can help other couples.

Both of my parents are Chinese Americans who immigrated from Hong Kong. Due to the divorce, I grew up in Hong Kong from the ages of 8 to 18. Because of this I am bilingual, fully fluent in speaking Cantonese as well as reading and writing in traditional Chinese. My bicultural upbringing prepared me for the many biracial and bicultural couples I helped in my career. Even first and second generation immigrants from the same culture can have culture differences. Even couples who speak the same language, for example Mandarin, can have cultural differences because they came from different Mandarin speaking countries. My personal and professional experiences have uniquely equipped me to help these couples.

Professional Background

Along with my private practice, I am a contracted group supervisor at Fuller Psychological and Family Services. I have been the group supervisor for the center's MFT trainees since 2025.

Prior to my private practice in Pasadena, I origially started my private practice in San Ramon, which is in Contra Costa County in the East Bay of the Bay Area. I started living in Oakland since 1997, when I started my college education. I completed my B.A. in Psychology at San Francisco State University and my M.A. in Counseling at Western Seminary.

I moved to Pasadena in 2018 and restarted a private practice here. I recently completed my Ph.D. in Clinical Sexology from the International Institute of Clinical Sexology. I feel honored that I did my dissertation oral defense to my international professors and schoolmates. Through the school, I have met colleauges from around the world.
